A: When silver jewelry turns black, "oxidation" is the common colloquial term. Oxidation refers to the reaction of a substance with oxygen. However, silver (jewelry) turns black due to a reaction with "sulfur" in the air. Therefore, the black substance on the surface of silver (jewelry) (which may appear coffee-colored, light brown, dark brown, or reddish-brown) is "silver sulfide."
