It is made of metal, which is very unusual. The primary component is silver, alloyed with tin, copper, lead, iron, and other metals. It has a substantial weight. Such ancient Buddha images often contain sacred relics internally... sometimes, a faint rattling sound can be heard when shaken. However, most are silent... Many mistakenly identify it as an image of the Buddha. The figure depicted has a beard, with hands resting on the knees. In Tibet, this mudra is common for accomplished masters (like the Karmapa) or Thai Lersi protectors (like the Tiger Head Lersi). A mala (or medicinal pills) is depicted on the right hand, while the left hand appears to hold a scripture.
