The settings for our rings and necklaces are open-backed, allowing a clear view of the entire opal. We absolutely do not use any backing to enhance the color. Among the variations in color, the most significant characteristic of opal is its "play-of-color." Opal, derived from the Latin word "opalus," meaning "collection of the beauty of gemstones," is celebrated globally for its enchanting and beautiful iridescent effect, symbolizing nobility and status. The renowned English playwright Shakespeare once described opal as "a miracle, the queen of gems." Its colors are incredibly diverse, exhibiting different color changes from various angles, making each opal unique and highly collectible. Opal varieties include black opal, white opal (crystal opal), fire opal, and matrix opal. Opal is composed of silica spheres, too small to be seen with the naked eye and only visible under an electron microscope. These color changes are caused by diffraction and interference – a complex interplay of light and the spacing between these spheres, like a game of hide-and-seek! **Opal Care and Storage** If you have purchased natural opal or pearl, please be mindful to avoid overly humid environments or extreme temperature fluctuations, as temperature and humidity can accelerate the decomposition or oxidation of organic gemstones. Due to their hardness and formation, please also avoid hot springs and saunas, as well as products containing cleaning agents. Opal is a delicate gemstone that actually requires a bit of moisture for preservation. Therefore, we do not include desiccants in our jewelry pouches. Like other gemstones, it should not be worn during bathing or when visiting hot springs. Do not use silver polishing cloths to clean opals; instead, use a clean, dry cloth or a slightly damp cloth. We will provide a jewelry polishing cloth. After wearing, gently wipe the ring clean and store it in its protective pouch. For all-natural stone and metal jewelry, we advise against wearing them in hot springs or while bathing, as chemical substances can cause adverse reactions. Avoid direct contact with perfumes and bleach. Do not store jewelry in the bathroom or kitchen, as this can accelerate oxidation. For sterling silver or gold jewelry, when not in use, try to isolate them from moisture and air. Wipe them clean with a dry cloth or the provided polishing cloth, then store them in a PVC zipper bag. Each piece of jewelry should be stored separately to prevent scratches from contact with other jewelry or hard objects. Our zipper bags contain imported Japanese desiccants. **Natural Stone Inclusions** The natural stones used in the NOW Design studio are collected from around the world, each one being unique, often resulting in only one piece of its kind. These are specially selected natural stones, and we showcase their colors from different angles and under various lighting conditions for our clients. Natural stones may have internal impurities (inclusions), which are unavoidable. If this is a concern, we recommend against purchasing.
