A: When silver jewelry turns black, "oxidation" is a common folk term. Oxidation refers to a substance reacting with oxygen. However, silver jewelry actually turns black due to a reaction with "sulfur" in the air. The black substance on the surface of silver (which can appear coffee brown, light brown, dark brown, or russet) is "silver sulfide." If not properly maintained, silver jewelry will naturally darken and lose its luster. Therefore, the correct term is "sulphidation," a reaction caused by hydrogen sulfide in the air or sulfur dioxide in moisture, forming silver sulfide on the surface of the silver.
