【About Precious Opal】
Opal is a hydrous silicon dioxide (SiO2.nH2O) and has a hardness of about 5.0 to 6.5. It is amorphous, without a crystalline structure, and without a definite chemical composition. Opal specimens that exhibit a play-of-color are known as Precious Opal. Precious opal flashes iridescent colors when it is viewed from different angles, when the stone is moved or when the light source is moved. Such unique optical phenomenon makes opal a popular gem.
【Understanding Gold Purity】
The purity of gold is measured in karats. Pure gold measures 24 karats but is too soft in this state to be used effectively in jewelry. So it is alloyed with other metals such as silver, copper, etc. to increase its strength and durability. Common measurements once the alloy is added are 18 karat (75% gold), 14 karat (58.5%), and 10 karat (41.7%). A higher karat measurement in gold content indicates a greater value of the jewelry piece. Gold jewelry is usually stamped with the karat mark such as 18K, K18 or 750 for 18-karat gold, and 14K, K14 or 585 for 14-karat gold.

A jeweler will probably use a set of finger gauges, often called a ring sizer, which contains a series of metal bands in ½ size increments. If you want to measure it at home, you can use a ring you already have, or a piece of string or a strip of paper to measure your finger.
