Black Dahlan amulet beads from a Burmese Buddhist temple. The year is unknown, estimated to be from the 19th-20th century. It was already encased and set in a copper ring setting in Myanmar. These black alloy amulet beads are vastly different from the commonly seen gold and silver colored Dahlan amulet beads. They strongly resemble the natural mineral-like Lignite (Lai-Ngai) of grade 3. In reality, this is a special alloy created by melting more than ten types of metal, similar to the Mekkaphajin sacred items from Thailand. Many Buddhist sacred items in Thailand are inherited from Myanmar. This black Dahlan alloy, when passed to Thailand, became Mekkaphajin alloy. Due to differences in inherited alloy formulas, these black alloys also exhibit variations in shade and how they refract light. These small amulet beads from Myanmar are most frequently set into rings for everyday wear by ordinary people. Possessing an extremely powerful magnetic field, they can suppress extremely yin entities such as ghosts and evil spirits. They are excellent protective, boundary-creating, and lucky charm amulets. A merchant from mainland China who specializes in sourcing jade from Myanmar brought a batch (50-60 beads) of these black Dahlan amulet beads in 2023. The back is embellished with approximately 9 silver-gold alloy small amulet beads of varying sizes, known as 'Tazang' silver-gold alloy beads. These smaller amulet beads are harder to refine the smaller they are. They are also retrieved by Burmese Buddhist temples from ancient stupas. Their quantity is extremely limited, and their price is exceptionally high! Temples place 3-6 of these small amulet beads in very small bottles, with a fragrant charm oil paste applied inside... making them convenient for personal carrying.
