This scarf is a piece of organic cotton gauze, carefully dyed using a layering technique with traditional sappanwood and lac dyes. It has been dyed to a deep, wine-like crimson, reminiscent of the very colors of autumn winds. Dimensions are approximately 95cm x 190cm (including about 1cm fringe), weighing 75g. Sappanwood, a dye derived from the heartwood of a tree, was imported into Japan during the Asuka period. It was historically used to dye the robes of nobles and has been valued as a medicinal herb, particularly beneficial for women's health since ancient times. Lac dye is a refined resinous extract from the lac insect. It has been utilized by humankind for centuries, not only as a dye but also in traditional Chinese medicine as a hemostatic and antimicrobial agent.
