It was later introduced to the Iberian Peninsula (modern-day Spain and Portugal) in the early eighth century with the Moorish invasions. Spanish Damascene pieces often feature motifs of birds and flowers, as well as Islamic geometric patterns. The technique involves using a base of iron or copper alloy, onto which fine lines are etched. Thin sheets of real gold and silver are then meticulously shaped into patterns and hammered into these etched lines. A layer of lacquer is applied and fired to prevent oxidation and rust of the base metal, followed by polishing. Finally, intricate micro-engraving is performed before the piece is set into jewelry.
