Among color variations, the most significant is the "play-of-color" in opals. Opal, derived from the Latin word "opalus," meaning "to gather the beauty of gemstones," is world-renowned for its magical and beautiful play-of-color effect. It is also a symbol of nobility and status. The famous English playwright Shakespeare once described opal as "the jewel of jewels." Its colors are incredibly diverse, displaying different hues from various angles. Each opal is unique, making it highly collectible. Opals include black opal, white opal (crystal opal), fire opal, and boulder opal. Opal is composed of structured silica spheres, invisible to the naked eye and only discernible under an electron microscope. These color variations are caused by diffraction and interference – a complex interaction, essentially light playing hide-and-seek with the gaps between these spherical structures! **Opal Care & Storage** If you have purchased an opal or pearl, please be especially mindful to avoid overly humid environments or drastic temperature changes. Both temperature and humidity can accelerate the decomposition or oxidation of organic gemstones. Due to their hardness and formation, avoid hot springs and baths, as well as products containing cleaning agents. Opal is a delicate gemstone that actually requires a bit of moisture for its preservation. Therefore, desiccants are not included in the storage bag. Like other gemstones, it should not be worn during bathing or when visiting hot springs. Do not use silver polishing cloths on opals. Simply wipe opals with a clean, dry, or slightly damp cloth. We will provide a jewelry polishing cloth. After wearing, gently wipe the ring clean and store it in the gemstone bag. For all natural gemstone and metal jewelry, it is not recommended to wear them in hot springs or during showers. Chemicals can cause adverse reactions with the jewelry; avoid direct contact with perfumes and bleach. Also, do not store jewelry in bathrooms or kitchens, as this can accelerate oxidation. For sterling silver or gold jewelry, when not in use, try to minimize exposure to moisture and air. Wipe clean with a dry cloth or the provided polishing cloth, then store in a PVC zipper bag. Each piece of jewelry should be stored separately to prevent scratches from collision with other jewelry or hard objects. The zipper bag already contains an imported Japanese desiccant. **Natural Stone Inclusions** The natural stones used in the NOW Design studio are collected from around the world, each one unique, often as a single piece. These are specially selected natural stones, and we showcase their colors from different angles and under various lighting conditions to our clients. Natural stones inevitably have internal impurities (inclusions); this cannot be avoided. If this is a concern, we do not recommend purchasing.
