Lapis lazuli is a semi-precious stone whose primary component is lazurite from the sodalite group, with multiple minerals from the same group, such as sodalite, haüyne, and nosean, forming a complex solid solution. Its Japanese name is Ruri. It is a gemstone of deep blue to indigo hues, and due to the presence of pyrite grains, it is said to shimmer like a night sky.
Its use in ornamentation dates back to ancient times, as described in the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Book of Exodus.
The ancient lapis lazuli mines of Afghanistan, where extraction began thousands of years BC, continue to produce to this day.
The thought that we can now hold this beauty in our hands, precisely because people have admired its beauty, transported it across continents and seas, and passed it down through generations, evokes a serene feeling, as if inheriting the stone's beauty as a mineral and the historical sentiments of people towards it.
It has been used as a precious decorative element in Tutankhamun's burial artifacts, the Konjaku-tai (blue jade belt) of the Shosoin Imperial Treasury, the clasps of the Konjiki-do (Golden Hall) at Chuson-ji Temple, the coat of arms of the Medici family, and the possessions of Louis XIV.
Lapis lazuli, celebrated for its deep blue, was considered the stone of Osiris, the god of the sky and underworld, in ancient Egypt, and was revered by Pliny the Elder in ancient Rome as a "fragment of the heavens."
The beauty and elegance of this mineral traveled along the Silk Road as a costly pigment and adornment, sometimes trading for prices equivalent to gold.
It is said that Vincent van Gogh mixed powdered lapis lazuli with zinc yellow to boldly yet serenely depict "Starry Night," with its dawn and cypresses.
In paintings, it has also been used for the colors in "Girl with a Pearl Earring" by Vermeer, the national treasure "Irises" by Ogata Korin, and the blue robes of the Virgin Mary when she is depicted.
■ About Onyx
Inner Beauty, Patience, Control, Reason
A variety of chalcedony, belonging to the hexagonal crystal system with a Mohs hardness of 7. It is a black variety of minerals formed by the layered precipitation of quartz and chalcedony within the cavities of igneous or sedimentary rocks. Its name originates from the Greek word for 'fingernail.' Legend has it that a fingernail of the goddess Venus fell into the Indus River and became onyx. It appears in the Old Testament Book of Exodus among nine precious stones, used in the shoulder pieces of the ephod and the breastplate of the high priest.
When Queen Victoria of England wore black jet, its elegance and femininity became popular, leading to a trend of black accessories in Europe.
As onyx is more widely available than jet, black onyx is often used as a substitute for shorl (black tourmaline) and jet (fossilized wood).
