[Book Description]
Ye Kun-kit (Head of Watershed Hong Kong, a platform dedicated to Hong Kong history): "The true stories of Hong Kong must be discovered, written, and passed down by Hong Kong people. Always on the front lines of imperial competition, Hong Kong has faced turbulent changes from ancient times to the present. People have fled to Hong Kong, and people have left Hong Kong, but Hong Kong cannot escape its destiny. On this tiny island, elites of Chinese and foreign politics and business, Eurasian individuals, and Asian revolutionaries have all left their footprints, shining with the brilliance of their era.
In today's world, where the balance of empires is shattered, Watershed Hong Kong looks back at the colorful stories of Hong Kong people from another time, recording them in black and white. Reflecting on the past to guide the future is even more crucial."
Chow Ho-ching (Enthusiast of Hong Kong History and Royal Culture): "The historical materials within the book are rich, weaving through ancient and modern times with stories of different historical figures, allowing readers to experience them firsthand. By borrowing historical tales of celebrities from past and present, it presents three-dimensional glimpses of bygone eras, dissecting various significant and minor events in Hong Kong's history.
Through understanding history, we can enrich our own 'cultural backpack' and show the world what Hong Kong culture and the Hong Kong spirit are."
"36 Hong Kong Historical Figures You Won't Find in Textbooks" is not an introductory book to Hong Kong history, yet it can be one. Unlike textbooks or common introductory books that provide readers with broad historical backgrounds and changes, this book focuses on individuals. It constructs the Hong Kong of today through the lives of these people, who span various sectors including politics, business, and culture. They come from different ethnic backgrounds, nationalities, genders, and include both 'us' and 'them.' From before the port was established to the present day, they have step-by-step shaped Hong Kong into what it is today, showcasing its diversity and resilience. It also raises a question many often ask – what does it mean to be a Hongkonger?
After writing this book, the identity of 'Hong Kong' and 'Hongkonger' seems to have become both clearer and more ambiguous. However, the people who have left their footprints here, the stories that have unfolded here, may allow you to piece together your own answer bit by bit. This book is merely a small fragment of the story, and more stories await our continued effort together in the future.
