He came from a wealthy family and studied painting with his father Chang Shufang since he was a child. He also studied calligraphy with the famous master Zhao Xi. In 1919, he went to Japan to study. In 1921, he was inspired by the "work-study" trend called by Cai Yuanpei to study in France. With the help of Chang Junmin, he went to Paris to study art and started his career in France. Sanyu was free and uninhibited by nature, pursuing freedom in life and art. He did not study in a formal art academy, but entered the Académie de la Grande Chaumière with a free atmosphere. He was different from his contemporaries such as Xu Beihong and Lin Fengmian, who studied in France. After completing his studies, he did not return to China to study, but chose to stay in Paris throughout his life, becoming one of the very few Chinese representatives among the Paris School of Painting in the 1920s. In the 1920s and 1930s, Sanyu obtained works promoted by close friends such as the famous French writer, collector and art dealer Henri-Pierre Roché, and the famous Dutch composer Johan Franco. Sanyu not only became famous in Europe, but also far away. Xu Zhimo, Shao Xunmei, etc., the famous poets and writers of the Republic of China in the East, also highly praised him. Under the impact of modern Western thought, Sanyu experimentally reinterpreted Chinese artistic traditions and achieved a cross-cultural aesthetic conception. Nude women, flowers and animals are the three major themes in Sanyu's creations. His early works have elegant colors and smooth lines. The pink and white tones are filled with a pleasant romantic mood; in the 1940s, Sanyu briefly went to New York to develop his career, and forged a deep friendship with the American photography master Robert Frank; after returning to Paris in the 1950s, he met another man who came to France Zhang Daqian, a Sichuan fellow who held the exhibition, became a close friend in his later years.
