Slowly, we landed at 64°09’N. The streets of Reykjavik, the capital, were eerily empty—perhaps the airport is the only place where you’ll find a crowd in Iceland. And yet, the city’s colors were unexpectedly vibrant, pierced by a sunlight of startling clarity. Through the skylight of the hotel, we looked out onto a patchwork of rooftops: white walls, black-framed windows, red gables, and slate-blue corrugated iron.
