Cinnabar, also known as 辰砂 (chénshā), 丹砂 (dānshā), 赤丹 (chìdān), or 汞沙 (gǒngshā), is mercuric sulfide that ranges from vermilion to brick-red. Historically, cinnabar has been a source for extracting vermilion or bright red pigments. Its color and properties stem from a hexagonal crystal system belonging to the trigonal crystal family, with crystals sometimes exhibiting twinning. For instance, in the creation of Thangka paintings, natural pigments derived from precious minerals and gemstones such as gold, silver, pearl, agate, coral, turquoise, malachite, and cinnabar, as well as botanicals like saffron, rhubarb, and indigo, are traditionally used for both coloring and embellishment. Cinnabar is generally divided into two categories: Purple Gold Cinnabar (紫金砂硃砂) with visible crystals, and Imperial Red Cinnabar (帝皇砂). The red hues of the two differ slightly. Purple Gold Cinnabar possesses a deeper red compared to Imperial Red Cinnabar and features inherent cinnabar crystals, making it favored by many. Imperial Red Cinnabar, on the other hand, lacks visibly discernible crystals within, offering a full-bodied vermilion. Its color is more refined, and it is typically priced higher than Purple Gold Cinnabar.
