Tibetans cherish their yaks as precious beings. They rely heavily on yaks for survival on the plateau—for their milk, hair, and meat. Families even name each yak, cherishing them like children and bringing them into their rooms during the cold winters to sleep together. Though they rarely eat meat, they slaughter one yak each winter for survival. The chosen yak is selected a month in advance, and the women of the family will chant heart mantras to it daily. Even though the yak sacrifices itself for humans, it is believed to have lived a life filled with blessings under loving care.
