Despite having "orchid" in its name, it's not related to true orchids. Sansevieria is a type of succulent, though its appearance is more akin to a foliage plant. In taxonomy, it belongs to the family Asparagaceae, subfamily Nolinoideae, and is a tropical plant. It symbolizes good health, longevity, wealth, and prosperity, making it a common foliage plant. Its leaves are often upright and sword-like. There are many varieties of Sansevieria worldwide, with around 70 species distributed from Africa to Asia, including Golden Sansevieria, Golden Edge Sansevieria (also known as 'King'), Silver Striped Sansevieria, Short-leaf Sansevieria, Dwarf Sansevieria, and Cylindrical Sansevieria. Today, we are introducing the charming Lotus Sansevieria. The Lotus Sansevieria is a mutated variety of Sansevieria, also known as Golden Edge Sansevieria due to the yellow stripes along its leaf margins. It thrives in warm and humid environments and is suitable for indoor cultivation as an ornamental plant. As a mutated variety, the Lotus Sansevieria cannot be propagated by leaf cuttings like other Sansevierias. Attempting to propagate it this way may result in plants that lack the golden edge, as the gene for this trait may not be reliably replicated. Therefore, it is best propagated by division, by separating and replanting young shoots once they have reached a suitable size. Sansevieria plants are not demanding in terms of their growing environment, making them ideal potted plants for decorating living rooms, studies, and other spaces. Their most significant benefit is their ability to purify the air. Experts suggest that Sansevieria can absorb over 80% of harmful indoor gases, with a particular strength in absorbing formaldehyde, making them highly practical for newly renovated homes. These aesthetically pleasing and functional potted Sansevierias can also help protect against radiation, making them an excellent choice for beginners looking for indoor plants! | Light | Extremely easy to grow, drought-tolerant, and relatively shade-tolerant. It prefers indoor locations with indirect sunlight. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight outdoors, not exceeding 2 hours. Sansevieria generally prefers warm, sunny environments. However, they are highly adaptable. If placed in direct sunlight, they can survive, but their leaves may appear lighter in color. In low-light indoor conditions, growth will slow down, leaves will become darker green, and the plant may become leggy. It's beneficial to occasionally move them to a sunny spot for better growth! | Watering | Remember, Sansevieria are plants native to arid environments. Therefore, adopt a "thoroughly dry, then thoroughly wet" watering method. In simple terms: "better dry than wet." Water only when the growing medium is completely dry to prevent root rot from overwatering. Most Sansevieria varieties do not require frequent watering, typically once every two weeks. However, adjust based on your specific growing conditions. Sansevieria are highly drought-tolerant; most failures occur due to overwatering! | Soil | Sansevieria originate from hot and dry climates, requiring well-draining soil. We use a potting mix with a specific ratio of perlite, and a layer of LECA at the bottom to enhance dryness or permeability. You can also purchase Akadama soil to add when repotting, as it is often used for its excellent drainage properties. 📝 Key Care Tips: Extremely drought-tolerant! Water only when the soil is dry. Indoor: Water once every 2-3 weeks.
