This piece is crafted from 100% Shetland wool yarn, imported directly from the Shetland Islands. While not as soft as merino wool, it is pleasantly non-itchy and offers a light feel due to its excellent air-trapping properties. With continued use, the yarns will naturally felt together, developing a unique, softened texture over time. To enhance this effect, the mittens are gently washed before shipping, bringing out an even softer, felt-like quality. This upbringing results in wool with longer fibers, a mix of coarser and finer hairs, and even some naturally colored fibers. In essence, it produces strong wool. A key characteristic of wool is its natural crimp. The degree of crimp varies by breed. British wool, including Shetland, is distinguished by its dense and abundant crimp, even more so than ordinary sheep. A higher crimp contributes to yarns that are more resilient, elastic, and voluminous. This voluminous quality allows the yarn to trap air effectively, making it highly insulating, warm, and lightweight. Above all, its strength ensures excellent durability.
