For centuries, Lokta paper has been used for writing sacred texts and has been an essential medium for Nepalese artisans, a precious papermaking tradition that continues to this day. The production process does not harm natural vegetation, contributing to reduced deforestation and fostering coexistence between livelihoods and the land.

Papermaking Craft Without Forest Destruction
【Handmade Paper】
Lokta is a local herbaceous plant in Nepal known for its strong and highly regenerative fibers. Lokta paper is handmade in the Himalayas and has been used for sacred texts since ancient times, serving as a primary material for Nepalese artisans for centuries. This paper is made from the Lokta shrub, which grows between 5,250 and 13,000 feet on the southern slopes of the Nepalese Himalayas.
【Eco-Friendly】
The Lokta shrub sprouts three to eight new shoots rapidly, making it one of the most eco-friendly and renewable non-tree papers. The paper is unprocessed by chemicals and is handmade in high-altitude villages.
【Preserving Art】
Farmers, home-based artisans, and small industries in the mountains rely on Lokta papermaking for their livelihood. Lokta has been used for sacred texts since antiquity and was a primary material for Nepalese artisans for centuries; this tradition continues today.
【Natural Colors】
No chemical dyes are added during the papermaking process. Instead, the natural bark textures are preserved, and natural elements like bougainvillea petals, marigold flowers, cornflowers, and bodhi leaves are used.
【Uniqueness】
Due to its handmade nature, handmade paper possesses natural textures. Specks from the outer bark can be seen within the paper, making each page unique and special.
The Lokta Paper Making Process
【Harvesting】
Stems are cut 20 to 25 cm or more above the ground. The bark of the harvested stems is peeled off with a sharp knife, then completely dried and stored. Since the plant is not uprooted, it regenerates fully in the following years and can be harvested again in about 6 years, making it a sustainable product.
【Softening】
The peeled bark is cut into small pieces and soaked for several hours. The plant is boiled for about 8 hours to soften the fibers, then washed with cold water. After cooling, it is processed into a smooth pulp using a manual blender.
【Straining】
About a cup of pulp is poured onto a wooden screen frame and spread evenly. Natural petals or seeds can be added at this stage.
【Sun Drying】
The frame is drained of water and dried in the sun.
▌About Perch
Treasures from beneath the Himalayas:
Perch is located on the small island of Taiwan. We love and appreciate the distinct characteristics of natural fibers, as renewable resources hold significant meaning for us. We primarily use hemp fibers, bark fibers from the Himalayas, and wool from New Zealand. Dyes are sourced from the natural beauty gifted by the earth, including roots, bark, nuts, leaves, flowers, and mineral dyes extracted from plants.
The Opportunity and Connection of Cross-Border Collaboration:
Nepal has a rich history of craftsmanship, and travelers worldwide highly regard the local arts, crafts, and the skills of its artisans. However, traditional crafts are widely forgotten as they do not align with modern economic models. Therefore, we collaborate with Nepalese artisans, supporting local communities, encouraging traditional craft techniques, and offering fair wages. By integrating local and international elements on a fair trade basis, we realize Perch's design philosophy. This is what motivates us to continue improving, and every consumer can participate in this beautiful journey.
We hope you enjoy our products as much as we do 🙂
