We are often asked, "How is shuttle embroidery different from regular machine embroidery?" Standard machine embroidery is automated; the machine reads the design and stitches it automatically, resulting in perfectly uniform and identical pieces. In contrast, shuttle embroidery is a craft where the artisan manually moves the fabric as they stitch the design. This human touch ensures that each piece has a unique character. No two embroidered pieces are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery possesses a texture that resembles hand-embroidery. The process involves transferring the sketch to the fabric and meticulously stitching while following the up-and-down movement of the needle, guided by the original artwork—a truly remarkable skill that is astonishing even to imagine. Currently, there are only about 400 people in Vietnam capable of shuttle embroidery. Of these, only 50 work professionally. Furthermore, a mere 30 have passed the highest level (Level 4) of embroidery certification. Among them, only 10 can execute the intricate designs of Pangandaran, which are considered exceptionally difficult. However, exceptional skill alone is not enough; embroidery requires a keen sense of aesthetics. Even the slightest nuance can significantly alter the overall impression. Therefore, at Pangandaran, we entrust our work to Hun, who possesses the highest level of expertise. Hun, now 46, has been practicing this craft since the age of 15, boasting 31 years of experience. Moreover, his artistic sensibility is truly outstanding. We place our complete trust in him. With recent economic development, traditional crafts in Vietnam, like elsewhere, face challenging circumstances. Since 2000, the number of shuttle embroidery artisans has been rapidly declining. While schools for this craft once existed, they have now been replaced by seasoned artisans taking on apprentices. Hun has trained four apprentices, but he notes that younger generations are rarely able to master the skill. Rapid economic growth has left traditional handcrafts behind, and it is predicted that the number of artisans will continue to decrease. This trend is accelerating even faster than in Japan, and without government support systems to protect these crafts, Vietnamese shuttle embroidery is on the verge of disappearing within the next decade or so.
