The Ryukin goldfish is hand-painted in a gentle gradient of different shades, built up over several passes rather than a single flat color, so the vivid hues of the fish come through naturally. Each fin is drawn line by line with an extra-fine brush. The eye is small, yet given a life-like expression: a black pupil, a white iris, and a soft outline traced around the white to give the face presence. The water grass is arranged piece by piece, with position and balance adjusted around the goldfish for a natural flow.
