During the process of collecting vintage pieces, I've gathered several incomplete ornaments. These have been personally repurposed by the curator, infusing them with new life.
**Apart from the floral oval embellishment itself, all other components have been thoughtfully repurposed by the curator using modern materials.**
▰▰▰▰▰▰Damascene▰▰▰▰▰▰
The art of Damascene from Spain, a metal inlay technique, traces its origins back over 2000 years to Damascus, the capital of Syria. It later arrived on the Iberian Peninsula (modern-day Spain and Portugal) in the early 8th century with the Moorish invasions, concurrently spreading to Japan via the Silk Road.
The Moors, essentially Arabs from Asia and North Africa who practiced Islam, were collectively known as "los moros" or "los musulmanes" at the time. They ruled over a significant portion of Spain for over 300 years. Even after being driven north, they maintained a prosperous presence in Andalusia, in southern Iberia, for another three centuries.
Their rule, lasting nearly eight centuries, finally ended in 1492 with their expulsion by the Spanish Catholic Monarchs, marking the unification of Spain. Though the Arab kingdom vanished, it profoundly influenced Spanish culture in numerous ways, leaving behind a legacy of precious heritage.
The technique involves creating intricate patterns on a base of iron or copper alloy, into which thin sheets of pure gold or silver are hammered and inlaid. A firing process with lacquer prevents oxidation and rust, followed by polishing and fine micro-engraving. Finally, these elements are set into jewelry.
