When one thinks of Hawaii, images of Stitch from childhood, Elvis Presley, flower leis, and hula dancing often come to mind. However, the very first "Hawaiian shirt" originated in the 19th century from a Japanese immigrant named Koichiro Miyamoto. He used materials from Japanese kimonos to sew it, establishing the style of the Hawaiian shirt. At that time, many laborers from Japan, China, and the Philippines influenced the shirt's design. The Japanese wore traditional work clothes with open collars and single left chest pockets, while Filipino immigrants wore untucked shirts with straight hemlines, both contributing to the modern Hawaiian shirt's silhouette. The evolution of patterns is attributed to a Chinese merchant, "Alex Chang," who combined local Hawaiian natural scenery—hibiscus flowers, palm trees, pineapples, and more.
