You often ask, "How is shuttle embroidery different from regular machine embroidery?" Regular machine embroidery reads an embroidery pattern and the machine stitches it automatically, resulting in uniform, identical embroidery every time. On the other hand, "shuttle embroidery" is a craft where an artisan manually moves the fabric while stitching the design. Because it's made by a person, each piece has a unique expression. No two embroideries are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery has a texture that resembles hand embroidery. It's an incredible craftsmanship that involves transferring the sketch to the fabric, referencing the original artwork, and stitching in sync with the up-and-down motion of the sewing machine needle – just imagining it is amazing. Currently, there are only about 400 people in Vietnam who can perform shuttle embroidery. Of these, only 50 can do it as a profession. Furthermore, only 30 have passed the highest level (Level 4) of embroidery certification. Among them, only 10 can embroider the intricate designs of Pangandaran, which are said to be very difficult. But being skilled isn't enough. Yes, embroidery requires a sense of style. A slight nuance can significantly alter the overall impression. Therefore, at Pangandaran, we entrust our work to Hun, who possesses the highest level of skill. Hun is currently 46 years old but has been in this field for 31 years, starting at the age of 15. Moreover, he has a truly excellent sense of style. We place our complete trust in him. Due to recent economic development, traditional crafts in Vietnam, like elsewhere, face a challenging environment. Since 2000, the number of people who can perform shuttle embroidery has been rapidly declining, and there are no young people capable of it nowadays. It is predicted that the number of artisans will continue to decrease, and Vietnamese shuttle embroidery is on the verge of disappearing within the next decade or so.
