RESEARCH NOTES embodies a spirit of “Explore more,” a notebook developed to support every adventure and investigation life brings. The Research Notes series is designed for everyday recording and research—think culinary explorations, film studies, coffee tasting notes, travel diaries, and more. Its inner pages offer a notable degree of water resistance, are acid-free, strong, and tear-resistant, holding up even when wet. Fountain pen ink glides on smoothly without bleeding, and show-through is virtually non-existent. The paper is compatible with a wide array of writing and drawing instruments. (More details on water-resistant paper follow below.) Each notebook contains 48 pages, bound with thread. The cover design is heat-embossed: Large: 11 x 21 cm, Light Brown Paper 71g, Plain White Paper 77g Small: 9 x 12.5 cm, Light Brown Paper 34g, Plain White Paper 37g Lined / Plain White Paper The line spacing is 6.5mm, suitable for both English and Chinese writing. The lines are composed of a fine, continuous dotted pattern, ensuring your writing strokes remain uninterrupted. Cover Design Theme: Paper and Sky, Graphic inspired by M.C. Escher Dot Grid / Plain White Paper The dot grid is a new addition. The grid system is our proprietary “Precise Dot Grid System,” featuring small crosses that allow for more accurate alignment when drawing lines. These crosses seamlessly integrate with your drawn lines, appearing as one cohesive element. Blank / Plain White Paper Blank / Light Brown Paper ----- Hand-stitched, dedicated to secure binding ----- The RESEARCH NOTES water-resistant notebooks feature a thread-sewn binding, a technique less common today. Why is it less frequently used? It's time-consuming and costly. Despite this, we avoid the cheaper saddle-stitch binding. Firstly, Taiwan's climate can cause staples to rust. Secondly, thread binding is more durable and comfortable for your hand. ----- RN Water-Resistant Paper Characteristics: Writing Feel Meets Water Resistance ----- During research, you encounter diverse situations—jotting down recipes in a damp kitchen, accidental coffee spills while comparing brews, or sudden rain showers while documenting nature outdoors. That’s why we chose a highly specialized water-resistant paper for our inner pages. The Research Notes (RN) water-resistant paper differs from other similar products. While waterproof notebooks exist, their plastic-like texture and excessive smoothness, which hinder pen control, don't offer a superior writing experience. With ballpoint pens, notes can even transfer to the opposite page after closing the notebook for a while, causing reading difficulties. Some waterproof papers have improved their texture to feel more like traditional paper. However, these papers are incompatible with water-based inks, rendering fountain pens, water-based markers, and the like unusable. The only options are pencils and ballpoint pens, limiting the joy of writing. RN's water-resistant paper, however, retains the tactile feel of paper while writing. How do we define water-resistant versus waterproof? We distinguish them as follows: Waterproof paper repels water entirely, allowing you to shake off any liquid. Water-resistant paper absorbs water only on the surface; it doesn't become saturated throughout. Crucially, it remains tear-resistant even when wet, so there’s no concern of damage from moisture. Because only the surface gets wet, drying time is significantly reduced. While the paper may curl slightly upon drying, folding it gently can help flatten it. ----- Five Key Characteristics of RN Water-Resistant Paper ----- Anyone familiar with paper understands that achieving all these conditions simultaneously is unlikely, as some properties are inherently contradictory. Yet, the paper used in the RN water-resistant notebook defies conventional expectations, making it the world's first notebook to possess all five of these features: A degree of water resistance Compatibility with all types of writing instruments The authentic writing feel of paper Strength and tear resistance Minimal bleed-through and virtually no show-through Below, we’ve compiled a table to clearly illustrate the characteristics of similar papers available on the market: (◉: Best, ◯: Good, △: Average) Writing Instruments Usable with RN Water-Resistant Paper: Any writing instrument can be used. RN paper is also excellent for fountain pen use. It possesses the same anti-bleed properties as premium writing papers, but its true strength lies in its near-complete resistance to show-through. We even tested it with oil-based markers, notorious for showing through, and the RN water-resistant paper held up exceptionally well, with no show-through observed (See Figure 8). It accommodates any writing tool. We’ve even used it for watercolor painting, a feat no other supposedly waterproof/water-resistant paper can demonstrate. In practical application, if you use fountain pen ink with waterproof properties, your writing will remain smudge-free even after exposure to water once the ink dries (Note: This depends on the effectiveness of the waterproof ink).
