An Introduction to Taiwan's National Treasure: Hinoki Cypress (Taiwanese Agarwood) Hinoki cypress is a precious native tree species in Taiwan that grows exceptionally slowly. Its wood is hard, and its essential oil possesses a sweet aroma. It grows even slower than Taiwan's cypress, taking an average of over 700 years to develop rich oil content and a sweet fragrance. Prime hinoki cypress is mainly produced in areas like Sanxia, Fuxing, and Zhudong in Taiwan, with small quantities also found in the Shanlinxi area of central Taiwan. Hinoki cypress is an excellent building material. In the past, it was extensively logged and harvested to create high-end furniture, Buddhist statues, and various Taoist incense products such as stick incense, coil incense, incense powder, and incense bundles, as well as accessories, believed to ward off bad luck. Today, Taiwan's hinoki cypress is classified as an endangered plant. The fallen hinoki cypress harvested in earlier times is scarce. Since the official announcement of a "complete ban on natural forest logging" in 1991, coupled with long-term mountain closures, seasoned collectors who acquired old hinoki cypress are reluctant to sell. Sourcing genuine Taiwan hinoki cypress burl in the market is even rarer than Indonesian agarwood. This is because only hinoki cypress trees that are thousands of years old will produce burls with oil deposits as hard as gemstones. These naturally weathered burls are exceptionally rare and precious. (A Precious Organic Mineral) After thousands of years, hinoki cypress trees in primeval forests naturally die. They then undergo thirty to forty years of natural weathering, insect infestation, and the erosion of fungi on the non-oily sapwood. Finally, only the oil-rich wood remains, commonly known as "dao jia" (fallen timber). After sun and rain exposure, some pieces may crack and deform. It takes decades for stable wood suitable for carving to be preserved. Therefore, Taiwan hinoki cypress is a "national treasure," and weathered hinoki cypress timber is a "gem." It is akin to organic minerals (agarwood, coral, amber) that require hundreds or even thousands of years and processes to transform into such precious raw material, with a timeline as long as that for agarwood.
