Material Selection The full-grain leather used by "Cut Line" is sourced from Grade A, high-oil vegetable-tanned leather from Italy. As a natural material, and due to the minimal-impact vegetable tanning process employed by the tannery, the leather surface may inevitably bear minor "scars," "wrinkles," or "vein marks." We strive to avoid these during the cutting process, or position them on less visible or non-stressed areas of the product. 2. Hand-Stitched Construction Our products are meticulously hand-stitched, eschewing machine sewing. Before stitching, specialized awls are used to punch precise holes in the leather, enabling the creation of beautiful, wave-like stitch lines—a distinct characteristic that sets our work apart from machine-made items. While this process significantly extends production time, it is a crucial step where the artisan imbues the leather with soul and a warm, tactile feel. 3. Hand-Burnished Edges Before a piece is finished, the edges are carefully burnished. This process ensures the leather edges appear smooth, rounded, and natural. "Cut Line" employs a unique edge-finishing technique. First, sandpaper is used to repeatedly smooth any sharp edges. Then, an edge sealant is applied to create a flat surface, a process repeated 2-3 times. Finally, a layer of edge wax is applied, and the edges are repeatedly buffed with a burnishing tool until they achieve a smooth, polished finish. 4. Hand-Dyed Leather For our hand-dyed items, "Cut Line" utilizes imported Fiebing's leather alcohol dyes from the United States. To achieve a uniform and natural coloration, we begin by lightly dampening the leather surface. Then, using a sponge, the dye is applied layer by layer, gradually deepening the shade until the desired color is achieved. Once dry, a color-setting agent is applied to enhance colorfastness. The surface is then wiped with clean water to remove any dust and further even out the color. As each piece is hand-dyed, subtle variations in color will exist between products, making each item uniquely its own.
