This implies that in early times, of the many immigrants crossing the Taiwan Strait from Fujian and Guangdong, six out of ten would die, three would settle in Taiwan, and one would be too afraid to continue and return to mainland China. In an era when sailing technology was undeveloped, the Black Strait was the greatest nightmare for ships crossing to Taiwan. The Taiwan Strait is divided into two parts: the waters between Penghu and Fujian, a wide and shallow continental shelf known as the "Red Strait" in historical records; and the stretch from Penghu to Taiwan, the Black Strait. Due to strong currents eroding the seabed at a speed of 1.8 meters per second, numerous small depressions created an uneven seabed terrain. Coupled with strong, fixed northward ocean currents and a seabed that transitions from deep to shallow, creating whirlpools. After crossing the Black Strait, they would switch back to small boats to sneak ashore. Shipwrecks often occurred due to the harsh conditions and overcrowding in the stowaway ships. Modern vessels are engine-powered and can sail directly to Taiwan without relying on wind, and with weather forecasts, the occurrence of shipwrecks has been greatly reduced. "The Black Strait, dark as ink, is called the Black Ocean." This is primarily due to the Kuroshio Current. The swift currents carry away sediment and debris, reducing the impurities and nutrients in the water. This lessens the amount of sunlight reflected, allowing light to penetrate deeper, which is why the waters between Penghu appear so dark. From satellite imagery, this dark and deep waterway between the Penghu Islands and Taiwan is clearly visible. While mixing the ink, I recalled the stories heard in childhood and the many shipwrecks and artifacts often found in this Taiwanese Bermuda Triangle. Using the diverse soil colors of the sea, I chose green as the base to create this blend, symbolizing a rich ecosystem and accumulated history.
