※ Author Introduction
Jules Gabriel Verne (1828~1905)
Jules Verne was a French novelist, naturalist, and science writer. He authored over sixty science fiction novels in his lifetime and is hailed as the "father of science fiction." In France, 2005 was designated as Verne Year to commemorate the centenary of his death. Verne was passionate about research, dedicated to pursuing scientific truth, enjoyed traveling, and possessed a romantic imagination. His writing is fluid, his plots are humorous and engaging, and he excelled at creating tense and thrilling adventure narratives. He is the most translated French author. His representative works include *Journey to the Center of the Earth*, *Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea*, and *Around the World in Eighty Days*.
Vitaly Bianki (1894~1959)
Only someone like Bianki, who deeply loved nature, could bring such vivid natural literature to readers. His father was a biologist, and Bianki, influenced by him, loved nature from a young age and developed a strong interest in animal knowledge and the mysteries of the natural world. In addition to majoring in ornithology in college, he also studied the art of drawing plants and animals. With a strong desire to explore nature, he often interacted with forest rangers and hunters during scientific expeditions or travels, absorbing their experiences and insights into natural ecosystems, and paying close attention to the differences in the environment across the seasons. Years of research provided him with abundant material, laying a solid foundation for his future literary creations and resulting in his writing that immerses readers in natural scenery as if they were there. Bianki is thus known as the "First Discoverer of the Forest" and the "Translator of Forest Silence."
Bianki dedicated over thirty years to his writing, producing a large number of popular science works, fairy tales, and short stories. His representative works include *The Forest Chronicle*, *Young Columbus*, and *Written on the Snow*, with *The Forest Chronicle* being the most famous. *The Forest Chronicle* uses a unique news report style to describe ordinary, often overlooked phenomena, weaving in imaginative poetry and natural science to unveil the mysteries of the forest and nature. Its content, differing from typical children's books, has earned it the reputation of an "Encyclopedia of Nature" and it is beloved by readers of all ages.
Kenneth Grahame (1859~1932)
Grahame was a British author of children's literature. While working diligently at a bank by day, he dedicated his evenings to writing. His prose is delicate and warm. He published short works in magazines before collecting them into *Pagan Papers*, *The Golden Age*, and *Dream Days*. His most famous work is *The Wind in the Willows*, featuring anthropomorphic animals. Originally conceived by Grahame as bedtime stories for his children, it includes dreamlike, heartwarming natural scenes and four distinct animal characters: the shy Mole, the gentle Ratty, the impulsive Toad, and the steady Badger. The world view, blending childlike wonder with poetic sensibility, stems not only from a father's love for his children but also from his childhood experiences living with his grandmother in the picturesque environs of the River Thames, where he explored natural beauty and interacted with various small animals.
