In the late Edo period, under the sumptuary law known as the "Kugyo Kinritsu Rei" (regulation on austerity for farming households), commoners were prohibited from using cotton cloth. However, clothing made from hemp fabric offered insufficient protection against the long, snowy, and humid winters of Japan's northeastern region. Farmers therefore threaded fine threads through the gaps in the hemp fabric to improve insulation and strengthen the cloth, thus giving rise to "Kogin embroidery." This embroidery technique requires counting the warp threads of the fabric (simply put, counting squares) and executing running stitches row by row. If even a single stitch is misplaced, the entire section must be undone and redone. Consequently, every stitch in Kogin embroidery is a test of eyesight and patience, representing a delicate and persistent craft.
