The three defining characteristics of Shigaraki ware are: the "natural ash glaze"—a green crystalline layer formed by the chemical reaction between wood ash and clay; the high iron content of the clay, which oxidizes to a "fiery red" or reddish-brown hue during high-temperature firing; and the "kiln scars"—variations in the depth of ash burial creating distinct shades of color.
