**> Types of Cinnabar**
"Shuifei Sand," "Imperial Sand," "Purple Gold Sand," and "Crystal Sand" are all high-content quality cinnabar. Their **primary distinctions lie in color, texture, hardness, and production methods**.
**「Shuifei Sand」**
**A true red, with a slight orange undertone. Its surface has a warm, matte luster that becomes brighter with wear, developing a patina over time.**
This is produced by repeatedly grinding fine cinnabar particles into a paste, mixing with water, allowing it to settle, and then collecting the upper "turbid liquid." This liquid is then allowed to settle further for purification (the "Shuifei" method). The resulting cinnabar mud at the bottom is air-dried and then pressed using traditional methods. Upon cross-section, fine, uniform mineral sparkles can still be observed within.
**「Imperial Sand」**
**A richer red hue, with a brighter luster and higher hardness.**
Its production involves multiple stages of purification from natural cinnabar ore, including **crushing, grinding, magnetic separation, Shuifei purification, and high polishing**, followed by traditional pressing. Imperial Sand has minimal visible mineral sparkles on its surface, though they are present internally. The surface undergoes a **high polishing** process, giving it a metallic sheen, particularly vibrant in sunlight.
**「Purple Gold Sand」**
**A purplish-red color, with slightly lower hardness than Imperial Sand.**
Produced from natural cinnabar ore through stages like **crushing, grinding, and screening**, but **without the Shuifei purification process**. Consequently, the surface is less refined and features scattered, small mineral sparkles, creating a "starry sky" effect.
**「Crystal Sand」**
**A purplish-red color, with translucency.**
These are large cinnabar particles directly chipped from cinnabar ore. Large crystal grains are clearly visible on the surface, making each piece translucent under light and emitting a fluorescent red glow.

**> About Cinnabar**
The earliest documented records refer to cinnabar with a single character, "丹" (dān). This character is a pictograph; in ancient times, miners would excavate pits, and from within these pits, they would extract minerals. Thus, the character "丹" is essentially the character "井" (jǐng, well) with a dot in the middle, signifying the extraction of something from a mined pit—this something being cinnabar.
Because cinnabar is red, often a deep red, "朱" (zhū) also signifies red. Later, "丹砂" (dānshā) became known as "朱砂" (zhūshā). "丹" and "朱" describe the color, while "砂" describes the shape, referring to irregular granular minerals.
The color of cinnabar is exceptionally enduring. Chinese calligraphy and painting are referred to as "丹青" (dānqīng), where "丹" signifies cinnabar. It is an indispensable component of pigments in "Eight Treasures Ink Paste," with cinnabar as its main ingredient.
From a Feng Shui perspective, cinnabar is collected from minerals imbued with the essence of the sun and moon, absorbing the positive energy of heaven and earth. Therefore, cinnabar possesses a powerful Yang energy field. We observe that jade feels cool to the touch, while cinnabar held in the hand feels warm.
Since ancient times, cinnabar has been indispensable in Taoist rituals for drawing talismans, consecrating objects, warding off evil, and suppressing malevolent energies. Cinnabar has always been revered as a supreme material for enhancing luck, transforming fortune, suppressing negative influences, repelling evil spirits, attracting blessings, and accumulating wealth. It carries auspicious meanings of great fortune and well-being.
The "Shennong Ben Cao Jing" (Classic of Materia Medica) lists cinnabar as a superior medicinal substance, often used in treatments for its properties to calm the spirit, detoxify, and alleviate insomnia and excessive dreaming.
Living in modern times, owning one or two cinnabar artifacts can also contribute to self-cultivation, benefiting both the eyes and the mind.
**> Authentication**
**All cinnabar products in our collection are high-content cinnabar with a substantial weight. You may use the following methods for authentication:**
. Burning cinnabar will cause it to turn black. (Please heat it indirectly. It is generally not recommended to burn finished products directly, as controlling the time and area is difficult. Prolonged heating that results in blackening cannot be reversed.)
. Genuine cinnabar can draw orangey-red lines on paper. (To avoid damaging the aesthetic of the finished product, please choose an inconspicuous area for drawing, or use a complimentary bead for testing.)
**> Care and Maintenance**
1. Avoid Corrosives
Cinnabar is a mineral and insoluble in water. However, frequent contact with chemicals such as soaps and shower gels can cause corrosion.
2. Avoid Contact with Metals
The mineral elements in cinnabar can absorb metal ions, causing irreversible dulling or blackening of the cinnabar.
3. Avoid High Temperatures
The mercuric sulfide component in cinnabar only releases at temperatures of 380 degrees Celsius. Therefore, as long as cinnabar jewelry is kept away from high-temperature environments, it can be worn with confidence.
4. Avoid Collisions with Hard or Sharp Objects
Cinnabar has a high hardness but is brittle; handle with care to prevent falls.
5. How to Clean
If your cinnabar appears dirty, do not soak it in water, as this can alter its original luster! Gently wipe it a few times with a slightly damp cotton cloth and allow it to air dry.
6. Oiling for Preservation
Apply a thin layer of white tea oil or olive oil to the finished product. Allow the surface to fully absorb the oil, enhancing its clarity and brilliance. If applying oil, you may seal it in a brocade box, possibly with a layer of plastic wrap to prevent the oil from staining the box's lining.
7. Frequent Handling
Regularly handling your cinnabar jewelry while wearing it will allow a very thin layer of natural oils from your skin to form on the surface, giving it an increasingly ancient and elegant appearance over time.
The actual product is more exquisite and beautiful than the photos.
