Gurjun Balsam Essential Oil (India)
Origin
Sourced from the Gurjun tree, which thrives in the tropical rainforests of India and Southeast Asia. Particularly high-quality sources include trees grown in India, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.
Appearance & Aroma
A pale yellow to amber transparent liquid, with a relatively viscous texture. Its aroma is rich in layers, featuring a warm woody scent with sweet undertones, accompanied by notes of pine resin, spice, and a faint hint of camphor or smoke. The overall fragrance is mellow, deep, and resonant.
Botanical Characteristics
The Gurjun tree is a large tree reaching heights of 30–45 meters, with greyish-brown bark and broad, leathery leaves. When the trunk is injured, it naturally secretes resin as a self-defense mechanism; this natural resin is the source from which the essential oil is extracted.
Extraction Part
Natural Resin
Key Chemical Constituents
Rare sesquiterpenes such as α-Gurjunene, β-Caryophyllene, and Aromadendrene, which provide the essential oil with stable fixative properties and a long-lasting fragrance.
Historical Uses
Gurjun balsam has long been traditionally used in Southeast Asia, not only as a precious resin but also frequently in religious ceremonies, incense making, and natural varnishes. In modern times, it has been widely adopted by the perfume industry as a base note fixative, extending the longevity of other essential oil aromas. It is highly valued for its smooth scent profile and its ability to harmonize the overall fragrance.
Personal Use Scenarios
For Diffusion: Add a few drops to a diffuser to create a calming atmosphere with woody and vanilla notes, ideal for meditation or evening relaxation.
Meditation & Mindfulness: Its aroma aids in inner balance, emotional stability, and energy grounding.
Perfume Creation & Blending: Used as a middle or base note, it can soften sharp scents and help blend citrus, spicy, or woody essential oils.
Natural Fragrance Crafting: Can be incorporated into formulations for incense sticks, solid perfumes, or handmade soaps to enhance aromatic complexity and diffusion.
