I've used various materials, replacing wood with cork to give the hand-carved stamps a more tactile feel and warmth. Recently, I discovered new materials in Japan – these tiny dolls, no bigger than a fingernail. They include auspicious symbols like Daruma and Maneki-neko. I felt they were a perfect fit for my Little Lucky Gods Cork Series. I've embedded these little dolls onto the back of the cork, and for this Golden Doll series, I've also designed new Little Lucky God motifs. Each pattern in this series is offered in both intaglio and relief styles. ▸ Intaglio: When stamping, the lines are removed, leaving the "surface" area. ▸ Relief: Conversely, the surface is removed, leaving the "lines." The intaglio and relief interpretations of the stamp designs each have their unique charm. And since they are the same design, you can use different ink pad colors for layering and filling, creating interesting effects even if the stamp isn't perfectly aligned.
