Description | The White Ox Cart Source | Lotus Sutra The Parable of the Burning House, also known as "The Parable of the Three Carts and the Burning House." The three carts refer to: the goat cart (small cart), the deer cart (medium cart), and the ox cart (large cart). Story: Children were playing in a house when it suddenly caught fire. The elder called out, "Quick, escape! The house is on fire!" The children, engrossed in their games, didn't believe the house was burning. The elder then said, "Outside the door are a goat cart, a deer cart, and an ox cart. Once you get in, you can ride them around, it's great fun!" To obtain the goat, deer, and ox carts, the children eagerly scrambled out of the house. The elder, filled with joy, bestowed upon each of them a magnificent white ox cart. In the parable, the goat cart represents the Śrāvaka vehicle, with goats having little strength, able to pull only one person. The deer cart symbolizes the Pratyekabuddha vehicle, also a Hinayana path. The ox, with its greater strength, can pull more people, thus representing the Mahayana Bodhisattva path. The burning house signifies impermanence. The children represent all sentient beings, who, indulging in the pleasures of the five desires, are tormented by the five defilements and the eight sufferings without realizing it, and are unwilling to practice the path.
