We are often asked, "How is shuttle embroidery different from regular machine embroidery?" Standard machine embroidery is automated, with the machine reading the design and stitching it precisely. This results in uniform, identical embroidery every time. In contrast, 《shuttle embroidery》 is a craft where the artisan manually moves the fabric while stitching the design. Because it's made by human hands, each piece has its own unique character. No two embroidered pieces are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery has a texture that resembles hand embroidery. It's an incredible artisanal skill that involves transferring the sketch to the fabric and stitching while referring to the original design, coordinating with the up-and-down motion of the sewing machine needle – just imagining it is impressive. Currently, there are only about 400 people in Vietnam who can perform shuttle embroidery. Of these, only 50 can do it professionally. Furthermore, only 30 have passed the highest embroidery certification level, Level 4. Among them, merely 10 can execute the intricate designs of Pangandaran, which are known to be challenging. However, being skilled isn't enough; embroidery requires a sense of style. Even a slight nuance can significantly alter the overall impression. For this reason, at Pangandaran, we entrust our work to Hun, who possesses the highest level of skill. Hun is currently 46 years old but has been embroidering since the age of 15, making him a veteran of 31 years in this field. Moreover, he has an exceptional sense for design. We place our complete trust in him. With recent economic development, Vietnam, like other countries, faces challenges in its traditional craft industries. Since 2000, the number of shuttle embroidery artisans has been rapidly declining. While there used to be schools for this craft, skilled artisans now train apprentices. Hun has taught four apprentices so far, but he notes that there are no young people learning the skill these days. Due to rapid economic growth, manual craftsmanship is being left behind, and the number of artisans is expected to decrease further. This trend is accelerating faster than in Japan, and the national system does not actively protect these traditions. As a result, Vietnam's shuttle embroidery is facing a precarious future, potentially disappearing within the next decade or so.
