The black sage sold in this store is a type of mugwort, and Taiwan also produces its own mugwort. So, why would the shop owner import mugwort from mainland China? It's the same reason I import white sage from California, USA, and sacred palo santo from Peru. Plants may thrive and grow in many places, but the "earth energy" of the land differs, which in turn affects the plant's energy. This is why the ancient saying "people of outstanding ability come from the land of outstanding natural beauty" exists. Furthermore, even within the same family or genus, different varieties can have different effects. Aside from climate and environmental influences on a plant's scent and efficacy each year, the most controllable factors are the variety and its growing location. The mugwort sold in this store is Qí Ai from Hubei Province, China. It is a type of mugwort named after its origin in Qizhou (historically referring to areas like Qichun County and Dawu County). It is one of the "Four Treasures of Qichun" (Qí Bamboo, Qí Ai, Qí Snake, and Qí Turtle) from Hubei Province, a geographical indication product and a local specialty of China. Qí Ai contains 17 known compounds, and its volatile oil content, total flavonoid content, and combustion heat are significantly superior to mugwort leaves produced in other regions. Qí Ai is a precious traditional Chinese medicine with a long history and renowned reputation throughout China. As early as the Ming Dynasty, pharmacologist Li Shizhen held Qí Ai in high regard and recorded in his Compendium of Materia Medica: "In recent times, those from Tangyang are called Northern Ai, those from Siming are called Sea Ai. Since the Chenghua period, those from Qizhou (ancient name for Qichun) are superior, used as tribute to the empire, and highly valued across the land, hence called Qí Ai." Legend has it that mugwort from other regions, when used for moxibustion on wine jars, cannot penetrate the jar, but Qí Ai moxibustion can. According to the "Annals of Qizhou," "White Ai is produced in Qizhou." Qí Ai derives its name from its place of origin. Li Shizhen's father, Li Yanwen, had extensive research on Qí Ai and authored "On Qí Ai," stating that Qí Ai "is produced on the sunny side of the mountains, harvested during the Dragon Boat Festival, and has significant benefits in treating illnesses and chronic conditions." Mugwort is one of the earliest herbs known to humankind in terms of knowledge and application. Li Shizhen, the great pharmacologist of the Ming Dynasty, stated in his Compendium of Materia Medica: "Mugwort, with its bitter and pungent taste, is non-toxic. It possesses functions such as warming and unblocking the meridians, invigorating qi and blood circulation, dispelling cold to relieve pain, clearing heat and detoxifying, regulating qi and menstruation, and replenishing vital energy... Regular use can strengthen the body and mind, promoting anti-aging and longevity, making it a sacred item for beauty and wellness, home healthcare, and gifting to friends and family." The mugwort from this shop is not for consumption (it is imported as a non-food item). It can be used for aromatherapy (excellent for clearing negative energy, just like burning white sage, trust Li Shizhen) or for foot soaks and baths (to cleanse areas with lingering negative energies, such as hospitals, cemeteries, or funeral homes; a mugwort bath upon returning can help purify and remove such energies). Storage Method: Store in a dry place, or use a desiccant, operate a dehumidifier, and take it out to bask in the sun when it's sunny. #Mugwort #ArtemisiaArgyi #Moxibustion #Purification #ClearingNegativeEnergy #Exorcism #Aromatherapy #Bath #FootSoak
