The 'Eagle Claw' is a succulent from the Haworthia genus in the Asphodelaceae family. Its leaves are sharply pointed, resembling an eagle's talon, and are densely packed with small, raised white nodules. It's known for being shade-tolerant and drought-resistant, making it a perfect addition to indoor spaces. While similar to Haworthia, the 'Eagle Claw' appears less rigid and boasts a more vibrant green hue compared to its relative.
It thrives in warm, dry, and sunny conditions but dislikes cold and excessive moisture. It's remarkably easy to care for and can even grow with insufficient sunlight. Avoid overwatering, as overly wet soil can lead to rot. During spring and autumn, increasing watering frequency will promote rapid growth. In the intense heat of summer, it enters a semi-dormant state, requiring reduced watering. Watering should also be minimal in winter, with the plant kept in a warm, south-facing indoor location.
Light
Prefers ample bright, indirect light. During the hot summer months, avoid direct sunlight and ensure good ventilation. It's important to note that while it tolerates shade, it cannot survive without any light. Prolonged darkness will cause the plant to lose its shape and become leggy, which takes a significant amount of time to correct.
Temperature
Not cold-hardy. The optimal growing temperature is between 15-25°C (59-77°F). It should not be exposed to temperatures below 10°C (50°F). Temperatures above 30°C (86°F) will induce dormancy.
Watering
Follow the principle of "water only when dry, and water thoroughly." Avoid waterlogging, which can cause root rot, but also prevent prolonged drought, which can lead to shriveled leaves. During the growing seasons of spring and autumn, water thoroughly once the soil is completely dry, approximately once a week. In summer, water sparingly every two weeks. In winter, water only when completely dry. Adjust watering frequency based on your specific growing environment.
Summer Dormancy
During the summer dormancy period due to high temperatures, the plant's growth slows down or stops, and lower leaves may occasionally dry out. Throughout the summer, keep the soil moderately dry. Provide a small amount of water around the edge of the pot each month. The 'Eagle Claw' is very robust and rarely suffers from rot. Maintaining just enough moisture to support the plant's slow or dormant root system is key. Ceasing watering entirely due to high temperatures can prolong its recovery. During dormancy, the plant may consume water and nutrients from its leaves, causing them to shrivel. Growth is typically minimal and difficult to observe during this period.
Propagation
Common propagation methods include division, cuttings, and sowing. Division can be done in conjunction with repotting at any time of year, but is often performed in April or May. Separate the offsets from the mother plant and pot them individually. After potting, place the new divisions in a shaded area and reduce watering. Gradually increase light and water as new roots develop.
Flowering
The plant flowers in spring and summer, producing racemose inflorescences. Pollination requires different individuals, and cross-pollination within the same genus is possible. If the flower stalk is not pollinated, it can be cut off to prevent the plant from expending nutrients on the developing seed head.
📝 Key Points: Tolerates shade and drought, prefers bright, indirect light, ensure good ventilation, water only when dry, and water thoroughly.
