From a farm boy to an internationally renowned calligrapher, Tu Chung-Kao has forged his own path in calligraphy with steadfastness and focus. He believes that even from an unlettered background, one can carve out the value of self-existence through ink and brush, as long as there is a love for words. Tu Chung-Kao initially studied Northern steles under Wang Kai-He, later apprenticing with Wang Chuang-Wei, becoming one of the "Seven Disciples of Wang." His calligraphic foundation is profound. He also studied landscape painting with Fu Chien-Fu. Although he later focused on calligraphy, the training in composition and spatial awareness is deeply embedded in his works. Subsequently, he sought guidance from renowned calligraphers such as Wang Pei-Yueh and Hsieh Tsung-An, and Yao Meng-Ku. Further, through Wang Pei-Yueh's introduction, he learned from the seal script master Hsi Nan-Hsun, progressively refining his techniques and comprehending the subtleties of the art of calligraphy. In 1977, Tu Chung-Kao paid a visit to Master Nan Huai-Chin and delved deeply into Buddhist studies and Zen contemplation. From then on, his creative vision was no longer confined to technical refinement but shifted towards the embodiment of life philosophy. He transformed "calligraphy" into a form of spiritual practice, observing the self and reflecting the universe in every stroke. His characters are not merely words but the flow of the spirit, the pulse of the soul.
