Yoshida Hiroshi (September 19, 1876 - April 5, 1950) is one of Japan's most renowned woodblock print artists and a central figure in Japan's "Shin-hanga Movement." He is celebrated for merging Western realistic techniques with Japan's traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock printing, focusing primarily on landscape paintings that depict famous Japanese scenery, European and American landscapes, and the South Pacific islands.
Biography and Background
Birthplace: Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan
Education: Studied Western painting in Tokyo during his youth, under renowned artists like Takeuchi Seihō. His early works were mainly watercolors and oil paintings.
Travels in Europe and America: In the early 1900s, he exhibited oil and watercolor paintings in the United States and Europe. He achieved great success in cities like Boston, Chicago, and New York, accumulating a rich international perspective.
Shift to Woodblock Prints: In the 1920s, driven by the Shin-hanga Movement, he began dedicating himself to woodblock print creation, blending traditional Ukiyo-e techniques with Western methods of light and shadow expression, forming his unique artistic style.

Understanding Japanese Woodblock Prints: Production Process and Division of Labor
1️⃣ Artist (絵師, Eschi / Artist)
Responsible for creating the original draft (下絵).
Provides overall composition, character, and landscape design.
Example: Hokusai Katsushika, Hiroshige Utagawa, Kawase Hasui.
2️⃣ Publisher (版元, Hanmoto / Publisher)
The core of the entire team, similar to a "Producer + Distributor."
Finances and plans the work, decides on themes and collaborates with artists.
Hires carvers and printers, oversees progress and quality.
Responsible for sales and promotion, determines print run quantities.
Example: Watanabe Shōzaburō of the Shin-hanga Movement.
3️⃣ Carver (彫師, Hōshi / Block Carver)
Transfers the artist's draft onto woodblocks.
Each color requires a dedicated woodblock.
Requires extremely high precision, down to the millimeter, to prevent color misregistration.
4️⃣ Printer (摺師, Surishi / Printer)
Uses woodblocks and pigments to print the image layer by layer onto Japanese paper.
Responsible for color nuances, gradients (ぼかし), and light and shadow effects.
The skill level directly impacts the final presentation of the artwork.
