From a farm boy to an internationally acclaimed calligrapher, Tu Chung-Kao forged his own path in the art of calligraphy with unwavering dedication and focus. He believes that even those from illiterate backgrounds can carve out their own sense of self through the brush and ink, as long as they harbor a passion for words. Tu Chung-Kao initially studied Northern stele inscriptions under Wang Kai-He and later became a disciple of Wang Chuang-Wei, earning him a place among the "Seven Disciples of Wang." His foundation in calligraphy is deeply rooted. He also studied landscape painting with Fu Chien-Fu. Although he later dedicated himself to calligraphy, the training in composition and spatial awareness is profoundly embedded in his works. Subsequently, he sought guidance from renowned calligraphers such as Wang Pei-Yueh and Hsieh Tsung-An, and Yao Meng-Ku. Under Wang Pei-Yueh's recommendation, he studied seal script with the master Hsi Nan-Hsun, gradually refining his techniques and gaining a profound understanding of the subtleties of the art of calligraphy. In 1977, Tu Chung-Kao met with Master Nan Huai-Chin and delved deeply into Buddhist studies and Zen contemplation. From then on, his creative vision expanded beyond technical refinement to the embodiment of life philosophy. He transformed "calligraphy" into a form of spiritual practice, observing himself and reflecting the universe within each stroke and line. His characters are not merely words but the flow of the spirit, the pulse of the mind. Tu Chung-Kao is not just a calligrapher but a "happy living" individual who practices life philosophy through writing.
