INTERESTING FACTS
The motanka (мотанка) doll is a Ukrainian folk tradition that is believed to be 5,000 years old. The practice originated in Ukraine and then spread to several other Slavic countries. Traditionally they are made without using scissors, needles, or anything sharp and are made with natural materials.
Perhaps most interestingly, motanka dolls do not have a face. This is because of an old folk belief that anything with a face invites a soul to inhabit it, and a soul could be good or bad. So rather than take the risk of attracting a bad soul, the dolls were left faceless and often featured a cross instead. A more modern interpretation is that the dolls have no face to let children’s imaginations develop.
Motanka dolls are believed to be protective talismans for the houses they live in and the families they live with. Each doll would be created with a specific intention, such as protecting the house from malicious spirits or ensuring that a marriage would be prosperous. In modern times, the dolls are a popular gift for the birth of a baby, engagements, weddings, and apparently even funerals. Motanka dolls given to babies are meant to keep the newborn healthy, and those given at weddings are meant to keep the marriage strong as well as turn away the evil eye.
Motankas can be made for all of these holidays:
-Births
-Christenings
-Weddings
-Christmas
-Easter
-Other religious holidays like the days of different saints
PLEASE NOTE that dolls are handmade. Due to this process, there may be a slight variation from one item to the next. Such variations are inherent in handmade products, so you may expect minor distinctions that will make your purchase special and truly one of a kind and the products you receive might vary slightly from the product pictures.
As each Motanka doll is unique, no two dolls are alike. Some variations in clothing/accessories is possible.
We like to celebrate the unique nature of each and every single product we offer. As well as the desirability that goes with the knowledge that you are buying a one off, handcrafted item. However if you do have any questions or queries regarding this please feel free to get in touch with me.
