Animal #29: Taiwan Serow - Hand-Embroidered Pin Brooch (Taiwan Endemic Species)

Born and raised in Taiwan, I find inspiration for my creations in the people and scenery of my homeland. The Taiwan serow is Taiwan's only wild bovine species. Taxonomically, animals with horns on their heads belong to the deer family if the horns are solid and shed, like the sika deer, sambar deer, or muntjac. However, if the horns are hollow and never shed, they belong to the bovine family. As goat horns fall into the latter category, the Taiwan serow is classified as a bovine. Its hooves are split to the sides, allowing it to navigate steep, exposed rocky slopes with ease. It enjoys feeding on young buds and tender leaves of trees; the branches in the embroidery design represent the Taiwanese fir, one of its favorite foods. Dimensions are approximately 4 x 5.2 cm.
