We've finally created our take on the quintessential A4 tote bag. Crafted from waterproof nylon, it's equipped with numerous pockets. The inner pocket, which also serves as a lid, offers versatile and convenient usage. ◎ Embroidery adorns the exterior of the bag and its pockets. Each piece possesses a unique character, meticulously hand-stitched by the skilled artisan, Hun, using a freehand embroidery machine. ◎ The base features urethane padding to absorb impact and support weight. ◎ A convenient pocket on the back, perfect for a smartphone, measures 18cm in height. ◎ D-rings are attached to both sides, allowing for the optional attachment of a shoulder strap. ◎ The interior includes three open, divided pockets and a zippered pocket that doubles as a lid. Keys and other small items can be attached to a snap hook with a cord. Elastic bands along the sides securely hold items like water bottles or umbrellas upright. ◎ The lining is made of brown nylon fabric. ◎ Waterproof nylon is used for all parts except the front embroidery and pocket areas. *Waterproof nylon has a water-repellent coating on the reverse side. You might often wonder, "How is freehand embroidery different from regular machine embroidery?" Standard machine embroidery reads a design and the machine stitches it automatically, resulting in perfectly uniform and identical pieces. In contrast, "freehand embroidery" is an artisanal skill where the artisan manually moves the fabric while stitching the design. Because it's made by human hands, each piece has a unique character. No two embroidered designs are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery possesses a texture that resembles hand-stitching. It's an incredible craft that involves transferring the sketch onto the fabric and stitching while referring to the original artwork, all while coordinating with the up-and-down motion of the sewing machine needle. Currently, there are only about 400 people in Vietnam who can perform freehand embroidery. Of these, only 50 are able to do it professionally. Furthermore, just 30 have passed the highest level (Level 4) of embroidery certification. Among them, only 10 possess the skill to execute the intricate designs required by Pangandaran. However, being skilled alone isn't enough; embroidery requires a sense of artistry. Subtle nuances can significantly alter the overall impression. For this reason, Pangandaran collaborates with Hun, who possesses the highest level of expertise. Hun, currently 46 years old, has been embroidering since he was 15, making him a veteran of 31 years in this field. Moreover, he has an exceptional artistic sense. We place our complete trust in him. Due to recent economic development, traditional crafts in Vietnam, like elsewhere, face challenging circumstances. Since 2000, the number of individuals capable of freehand embroidery has been rapidly declining, and there are virtually no young people learning this skill today. With the number of artisans expected to decrease further, Vietnamese freehand embroidery is on the verge of disappearing within the next decade or so.
