Our Home Is a Library - Taiwanese Hokkien Picture Book
【Story Introduction】
"Our Home Is a Library" tells the story of two children who wander into a mysterious old house. There, they learn from a bookkeeper about historical book burnings, contemporary information suppression, and the manipulation of fake news. The story emphasizes that reading is not only a gateway to knowledge but also a weapon for defending freedom and democracy. This book aims to inspire children to understand that "freedom is not something to be taken for granted." Only by reading diverse perspectives and cultivating critical thinking skills can one discern truth in an era of information chaos and resist authoritarianism.

👍🏻 Ngô͘ Ka-bêng (Founder of Taiwanese Chicken Floss Noodles, Director of Kaohsiung Taiwanese Language Promotion Association)
This book, "Our Home Is a Library," aims to discuss with children what parents worry about most today: the brainwashing of thought and culture through online videos, facing information warfare, fake news, and deception every day. Children today are exposed to an overwhelming amount of information but lack the ability to judge good from bad. Sìn-liông hopes that every parent will have the opportunity to read with their children and become individuals capable of independent thinking.
👍🏻 Nó͘-lah Yóu Pèi-kí
Dedicated to promoting human rights education, the late author Hsing Chia-hui long advocated for using picture books to discuss important matters with children.
"The King of the Whispering Trees" and "Our Home Is a Library" are excellent examples! Tō͘ Sìn-liông uses fantastical adventures and conflict-driven plots to draw children into the story's world, allowing them to experience what the protagonists see. It is highly suitable for teachers or parents to guide children in thinking and discussion, building critical thinking neural pathways, accumulating the habit of thinking about matters from multiple angles, and facing current online scams, fake news, and malicious individuals. This will enable them to protect themselves, further cultivate civic literacy, and safeguard our young and fragile democracy and freedom in Taiwan.
👍🏻 TUNG Lì-suán, Director of Taiwanese Hokkien Road Association
"The King of the Whispering Trees" uses science fiction to prompt reflection on "what kind of future do we want?" The story offers no conclusion, leaving readers with vast room for imagination.
"Our Home Is a Library" uses historical events to stimulate concern about real-world issues like "fake news, thought restriction, and even war." We must rely on reading to train our critical thinking skills to face the future.
Both books start from children's curiosity and can extend to many themes, making them truly worthwhile for parent-child co-reading and discussion.
