About the Artist Master Ceramicist Liang Shih-Chang was born in Tainan in 1957. At the age of 26, he apprenticed under Master Weng Kuo-Chen in Yingge, learning the art of wheel throwing, thus embarking on his journey into the world of ceramics. He has since held numerous ceramic exhibitions. His research into glazes is both deep and comprehensive, and he wields this knowledge with mastery, repeatedly pushing his creative boundaries in the realm of glazed works to produce truly remarkable pieces. In 1999, feeling creatively stagnant and uncertain of his path forward, Mr. Liang Shih-Chang decisively put aside his artistic endeavors to focus on jade appraisal. It was not until 2021 that he resolved to return to ceramic creation. He spent two years familiarizing himself with glazes, producing hundreds of samples in pursuit of a distinct style. Mr. Liang Shih-Chang's current works primarily feature glaze painting. He draws inspiration from nature, adhering to a principle of using no more than two glazes per piece, distinguishing between artistic and ceramic glazes. During the creation process, he first selects glazes that can best express the theme. He then utilizes the properties of the glaze – its thickness, layering, isolation, carving, marbling, or staining – to render the envisioned landscape. Simple brushstrokes are added in appropriate locations to enhance the artistic mood, before the piece is fired. In addition to glazes, materials for painting include the cracked textures of the clay body, marbled patterns, as well as natural elements like leaves and minerals. Regarding his return to ceramic artistry, Mr. Liang Shih-Chang finds inspiration in nature and expresses his artistic vision through glazes and clay. Ideas emerge like bamboo shoots after a spring rain. "To be able to convey artistic intent using my skilled ceramic techniques, glaze knowledge, and painting expertise fills me with immense joy and satisfaction.
