The white Shino glaze flows naturally, creating a texture as warm and soft as jade, while 24K gold accents shimmer within. Like an elegant lady in a magnificent white gown, it is understated yet uniquely captivating. Perfect for tea tasting or as a collectible, it reflects an exceptional sense of taste.
The glaze used is Shino, originating from Mino, Japan, a white glaze primarily composed of feldspar. The artist applies a custom-formulated Shino glaze to the piece, resulting in a warm, soft finish with rich depth after firing.
The White Shino style is achieved by applying the glaze after the initial bisque firing, with precise control over kiln temperature and high-temperature reduction to produce a jade-like white surface. When applied over rock mineral or black clay bodies, it resembles freshly fallen snow or a delicate layer of frost.
During high-temperature firing, the glaze flows naturally across the body, leaving behind layered, flowing patterns. Every time you pick it up or set it down, your fingertips can feel the subtle undulations of the surface.
The final gilding process involves hand-painting with 24K liquid gold (genuine gold), followed by kiln-firing. The gold luster is warm and restrained, flickering delicately within the light and shadow.
Works from yuhuayuart are crafted for those who cherish details and appreciate the quality of life, turning every tea-drinking experience into an extension of enjoyment and taste.
Purchase Notes
1. Each piece by yuhuayuart is purely handmade by the artist, making every one unique—this is the true charm of handmade pottery.
2. Every work is one-of-a-kind. Once sold, that specific design is no longer available. If a piece you admire has already been sold, please feel free to message us to inquire about similar works.
3. During the firing process, the glaze flows and settles naturally; subtle crazing may also occur on the surface due to temperature variations, which is a characteristic of kiln-fired ceramics. Please feel free to message us with any questions regarding the works.
4. All works are photographed in a studio to represent their original colors as accurately as possible. Please refer to the physical product for final color accuracy; variations in color are not considered defects.
Care Instructions | Gilded Works
Please gently wipe the gilded layer with a soft cloth. Avoid using scrubbing pads or hard-bristled brushes, and do not soak in cleaning agents for extended periods. Do not place in a microwave (as the metal may cause sparks) or a dishwasher to prevent the gold layer from wearing down or peeling.
About the Artist | Teacher Yu Hua-Yu
Born in 1980, he was deeply captivated by wheel-throwing during middle school. After completing his military service, he moved to Yingge and studied under masters Wu Kuo-Jung and Wu Chien-Tsai, dedicating over twenty years to ceramic art. He has developed the Yo-hen Shino, rock mineral, and purple clay cloud-mist series, and successfully recreated the ceramic firing techniques of Song Dynasty celadon.
Creative Philosophy
Teacher Yu centers his work on kiln transformation, believing that every piece is a joint creation between the potter and the user that transcends time and space. Each crack and every layer of color deepens with the user's daily life, becoming an object of the "beauty of use." He aims to make tea drinking more than a simple act; it is an extension of pleasure and taste.
