Each fragment was originally incomplete, carrying the texture, luster, and traces of use from different eras. Silk is highly sensitive to tension, and every hand stitch requires precision: too heavy, and the fabric loses its flatness; too light, and the structure cannot hold. After creating over 400 hand-stitched pieces, the right balance is found through experience. The reverse side uses soft deep green wool-like fabric to gently support the vibrant front, with small mineral beads at both ends, giving the piece a light, dreamlike touch and a seamless finish. This work does not aim to recreate the past; rather, it allows materials once part of daily life to continue existing in a new, complete form. Shitamachi Ukiyo preserves not a specific historical moment, but the gentle and steady qualities that emerge only through the accumulation of time.
