The exact origin of bookplates is unrecorded, but according to most scholars, it emerged around the 15th century in present-day Germany. Printing technology, which had traveled from China to Europe, was not yet flourishing, and the techniques were not sufficiently refined. Books were therefore very expensive at the time. Apart from the private libraries of royalty and nobility, or books held in monastic collections, ordinary people found it difficult to own books. Nevertheless, even treasured books of the nobility were frequently stolen or even claimed by others. Thus, nobles would carve their family crests onto wooden blocks, transfer these designs onto paper using ink, and add the then-common Latin phrase EX-LIBRIS, also known in English as "Bookplate," signifying "This is my book," "My library," or "I possess this." Finally, this small piece of paper was affixed to the blank page at the front of a book, allowing anyone who saw it to know the identity of the book's owner. This is the "bookplate."
