“Let’s do it. No delusions. No projections. We’ll just make tonight great.” Before Sunrise is a 1995 American romantic film directed by Richard Linklater. It is the first entry of the “Before Trilogy,” followed by Before Sunset (2004) and Before Midnight (2013). The story begins on a train, where Celine, a French girl, moves away from a quarreling couple and sits across from Jesse, an American traveler. Their conversation soon unfolds into deep discussions about love, relationships, and family. Jesse convinces Celine to get off the train with him in Vienna, where they wander the city, spending all their money and sharing intimate thoughts. Despite their clear attraction, they choose not to exchange contact information, agreeing only to meet again in six months at the same place. Inspired by the director’s own real-life experience, the film focuses almost entirely on dialogue and the chemistry between two strangers from different cultural backgrounds. What captivated me was the pure romance of living fully in the moment. Watching the later films made the experience even richer. I especially enjoy the spontaneous encounters with strangers, like NPCs, and the silences between conversations that reveal both intimacy and awkwardness.
