Hand-drawn tourist map of Lantau Island in the 1960s: Tung Chung, Ngong Ping, Shek Pik, Cheung Sha

In the 1960s, Lantau Island developed into one of the local tourist destinations. Yongshe, formed by hiking enthusiasts, publishes Haiguang Magazine, which introduces local and foreign tourist attractions. The hand-drawn maps by founder Li Minfei record many of the past scenery. Tung Chung has been inhabited since the Song Dynasty. During the Qing Dynasty, due to the rampant pirates in the nearby area, the Qing government built a fort here for defense. As early as 1979, Tung Chung Fort was listed as a statutory monument. In the 1960s, Tung Chung was established, and the estuary still maintained its natural state. The Chek Lap Kok Island on the opposite side has not yet been reclaimed (it is written as Chek Lap Kok Island on the map). During the construction of Chek Lap Kok Airport, most of the land on Chek Lap Kok Island was leveled, leaving only Scenic Hill and Pak Sha Tsui next to the crossing bay in the southeast; after reclamation and filling of about 10 square kilometers, it became the Hong Kong International Airport. location. Shek Pik Valley is surrounded by mountains on three sides and has a long history. However, after the government built Shek Pik Reservoir in the area, the original villages have long since disappeared. Maps from the 1960s still show the ruins of many villages. About 260 villagers from four villages (including Shekbi Village, Gangbei Village, Hangzai Village and Fenbei Village) who originally lived in the plains of the valley and made a living from farming need to be relocated. Among them, most villagers in Shekbi Village chose to "exchange houses for land" and relocated. Village to Tsuen Wan New Town, among the six tenement buildings built by the government for the villagers (Stone Pik New Estate); some were also moved to the Silver Bay area of Mui Wo Pier, while the villagers of Fung Pui Village who chose to stay on Lantau Island were resettled Go to nearby Tai Long Wan New Village and continue farming. From the map, we can see that the bus from Mui Wo only went to Shui Hau. If tourists want to go to Ngong Ping, they have to get off at Shui Hau and then follow the road through Shek Pik or go up the water channel path, which takes three hours.
